Avoli is a Northern Italian restaurant, located in the historic Omaha neighborhood of Dundee. We hope a dining experience at Avoli will remind you of a trip to Italy or help you imagine what eating in Italy would be like. When we began dreaming and planning a new restaurant, we wanted to recreate an authentic Italian experience. We wanted to give diners an opportunity to possibly try something they may not have had before. We felt Omaha needed an Italian restaurant with a modern twist. Avoli’s wine list contains only wines you find in the Northern regions of Italy, the food consists of many local ingredients and what we can’t find locally, we import from Italy.

Dario and I have lived in different places, Dario is from Sarajevo, Bosnia and I grew up in Kearney, Nebraska. We met in Munich, Germany where we were married. We moved to New York city where we lived for many years until September 11, 2001. We have been in Omaha ever since. We opened our first restaurant, Dario’s Brasserie, in 2006. Dario is a French classically trained chef, he attended the French Culinary Institute in New York.

We are proud to call Omaha our home and so happy we chose to start our lives over in this community. The city of Omaha is amazing, it’s been extremely supportive and welcoming, we look forward to being here for years to come. We hope you love Avoli as much as we do.

We met in Metropolitan Community College’s Culinary program, which was a great place to earn our credentials and broaden our network of friends, chefs, and fellow foodies. But we both agree our ongoing education has been and will always be through travel. We travel whenever we have the chance, and sometimes we’ll plan a trip around reservations at a specific restaurant. We’ve had some amazing meals and some great adventures, and it all shows up in the food we serve.

WE SERVE FOOD BASED ON OUR BEST MEMORIES.
Our families were our original culinary inspiration, and everything we serve honors them and their memories. Canadian family who hosted family gatherings filled with laughter, joy, food and spirits. An Italian-Canadian Great-Aunt who served up food that evoked warm emotions as well as satisfied appetites. A Belgian-American grandma from South Omaha who dished out delicious kneeples, head cheese, and plum dumplings. We owe our success in large part to their support. When we’re in the kitchen, we’re always cooking for them.

The best part about owning a restaurant is that we have a creative outlet for our ideas. In the past four years, we’ve offered more than 1,400 specials with only a few repeats.
SOMETIMES IDEAS COME ABOUT WHILE WE’RE SIPPING ON COFFEE WATCHING OUR DOGS PLAY, other times an idea comes from a memorable meal.

Our family farm is one of our main sources for produce–it’s been in the Urban family for 100 years, so we know it’s high-quality and grown with love.

We love the creative experimentation that comes from mixing “high” and “low” food concepts. Recently we offered the “Ethan Special” based on Paul’s 10-year-old nephew’s lunch–white bread, bologna, mayo, cheese, with smashed Doritos.We offered a slightly scaled up version that included Grey Plume’s mortadella served with slaw on an onion roll and – for those who wanted it “Ethan Style” – Doritos on the side.”
Maybe we’ll introduce a customer to a new food preparation they wouldn’t have tried before. Maybe we’ll remove some of the pretension associated with fine dining. Or maybe we’ll just leave you with a full belly and a great memory.

A little about us…
We started Clancy’s Pub in 1977 at the former location on 72nd & Pacific and prided ourselves on making “the best homemade food served in a sports bar.” We were known for our great daily specials, including our “Famous Steak Day” -during our height with 4 locations; we would sell over 1,000 steaks on any Wednesday afternoon. This was way before the wave of chain sports bars erupted in the 90’s.​ Every March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day became the biggest party in Omaha. I was even bussing customers around to the then 4 Clancy’s locations. No matter what the cost, I wanted the biggest party around. Since then, we have downsized to two locations; one at 168th & Center in Omaha and Clancy’s in Scottsdale, AZ opened in 2008. My “long time” managers, Randy, and Nickie, have replaced me daily. In 1951, Eddie Galas founded Eddie’s Bar and Cafe, a small sandwich shop and bar in South Omaha. Throughout the years, we have stayed true to Eddie’s vision of continually expanding and remodeling our location, menus, and services to meet the growing needs of our customers.

In 1985, Eddie received the Nebraska Restaurant Association’s most prestigious award, the Mary Lutz Trophy, as the Restaurateur of the Year due to his persistence in transforming his little cafe into a South Omaha landmark. This award was especially meaningful because Frank Kawa, founder of Johnny’s Cafe, was Eddie’s mentor as a boy and also the first recipient of the award.

Although fire destroyed the establishment in 1987, the business rose from the ashes and was resurrected as a catering business, both on-site and off-site.

Eventually, the business was sold to Kris and Cheryl Galas who have passionately provided customers throughout the area with tasty catering services ever since. In March 1999, we purchased the Millard Social Hall and Eddie’s Social Hall which are more flexible to suit your needs. Off-site or on-site, Eddie’s catering strives to make your event memorable with savory cuisine and remarkable service.

Hardy Coffee

My husband, Luke, and I moved back to our hometown of Omaha, NE and started a small bakery in 2010. In those early years, we subleased a kitchen and tiny storefront from Aromas Coffeehouse on the corner of 11th and Jones. A year and a half later, we purchased the coffee shop and have since opened three additional locations. In 2015, we began roasting our own coffee under the brand Hardy Coffee Co. and later brought every piece (bakery, coffee shops, roasting lab) and location (downtown, Benson, North Omaha, Chalco) of the business under that unified name. My maiden name.

To us, specialty coffee (and all that goes with it) isn’t so much about indulgence, but ritual–having places and moments and things in life that add value and create rhythm.

We’re open daily for our neighbors to grab a cup of coffee together, launch a business, schedule a study session, or meet up for a story time playdate. It turns out that excellent coffee and baked goods make for a great excuse to get together and build something or simply unplug. We’ve also launched a drive-thru location because it doesn’t always work to sit at a local coffee shop for these moments of ritual and you shouldn’t have to choose between good coffee and convenient coffee.

We make every menu item intentionally, with you in mind—to fuel the difference-makers of our city and to partner with wholesale accounts across the region to do the same for the communities they know and love.

Pasta Amore

OUR STORY

No matter where you go or turn, you will always end up at home! Pasta Amore e Fantasia is the lifework of Chef Calgero Lillo ‘Leo’ Fascianella. Born in San Cataldo, Sicily in 1956, he emigrated with his parents to the United States in 1972. A family portrait commemorating their Italian heritage is on the wall near the bar, Leo in the red tie and his mom in the red scarf. Leo worked in New York, Las Vegas and Chicago prior to becoming a chef at Omaha’s famed restaurant ‘The Golden Apple.’ In 1986, Leo opened Pasta Amore, one year before he married his wife Patricia.

Leo lovingly called his Pasta Amore dishes “edible paintings” for the artworks that they are, and he presented them on white plates on a white tablecloth as a canvas, a tradition which we continue in his honor. He is a recipient of the Golden Toque, the highest honor awarded to chefs in the United States – indicative of a lifetime of dedication. He was also inducted into the Omaha Restaurant Association’s Hospitality Hall of Fame in 2009.

Leo never took a sick day. The secret to staying healthy, he said, was “good food and happiness.” Leo epitomizes the American Dream. He had a dream, he worked for it, he earned it, and made it come true. As he would say, ‘Viva Omaha! Viva Nebraska! God bless America!’

Leo will never be truly gone – we, his friends, are happily picking up the baton so that he and his wife Patricia can enjoy a well-deserved retirement. Leo’s dream was Pasta Amore, which he loved with a passion for 36 years. By carrying it into the future, we honor him, his culinary legacy, his beloved family and loyal customers.

OUR STORY
Our Philosophy – At Pint Nine, we are committed to tradition and innovation. We stand on the tradition of brewers before us to create aroma driven American ales and complex Belgian beers. We appreciate fine German lagers and English session ales, but we also crave the innovation of one-off batches and barrel aging. Our beers are highly fermentable and highly digestible, while being scientifically sound and artfully executed. We hope you enjoy drinking our beers as much as we enjoy brewing them. Cheers!

What’s in a name? – Pint Nine = 16.9 ounces = .5 liters = 500 milliliters

Before there were so many great American Craft Breweries, we had to get our “good” beers from local bottle shops. Most of these highly prized beers came from fantastic little European cities, and graced our shores in 16.9 oz. bottles. We’d lovingly refer to each bottle as a “Pint Nine”, and the name just stuck. When it came time to start our brewery, it just seemed natural to name it Pint Nine, a phrase that had been with us since the beginning of our great beer adventure. We hope Pint Nine can be part of your great beer adventure too.

Pitch Pizzeria is a hip and modern restaurant that just happens to serve some of the best Italian food and pizza in town. Their pizzas are fired in a coal oven, giving it an authentic flavor that is hard to find in America. The Quatro is an especially tasty pie that is topped with four different cheeses including goat cheese, mozzarella, smoked cheddar and Grana Padano. Blane Hunter (AKA Mr. Porky Butts) grew up barbecuing in south Texas from a very young age. He was tending fires and checking temps as soon as he could help with his dad’s passion for the magic that happens in the world of “low and slow” pit smoking. With over a 27 years of experience combined with a Culinary education from Johnson and Wales and FVTC culinary schools Blane started competing professionally in the world of BBQ in 2013. In the five short years that followed he has accumulated one of the most impressive resumes on the BBQ circuit across America.

A 16-year veteran of the restaurant industry, Jared began his career in Lincoln, Neb., working at restaurants such as the Rococo Theatre as sous chef and Misty’s Steakhouse and Brewery as executive chef. While working, he attended culinary school at Southeast Community College, graduating as a certified chef with the American Culinary Federation. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Culinology (food science). With degree in hand, he traveled to Chicago and became a chef with Lettuce Entertain You in the upscale Wildfire division, honing his skills in American, French and Asian techniques. Three years later, he joined Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant as R&D chef, developing wine dinners and menu concepts and working with the Celiac Foundation to help create more effective dining options for allergen sensitive diners.

After spending nearly six years in Chicago, Jared and his family moved back to Nebraska, where he took a position as an executive chef for Blue Sushi Sake Grill in Omaha before developing and opening Railcar Modern American Kitchen.

The Story of Two Texans! Roja Mexican Grill opened in Nebraska in 2004. But two of its owners hail from Texas. They met seemingly by fate, and an undeniable fondness for mouth-watering fare. One, a culinary explorer from Austin, traveled the region, sampling dishes from the Yucat án Peninsula to Baja California. The other, born and raised in Houston, developed a palate for border-style cuisine at a frighteningly young age when instead of strained peas, his mother mistakenly fed him hefty spoonfuls of homemade salsa verde. When the two met, mariachi filled the air and Roja Mexican Grill was born.

Roja is influenced by the border-style flavors of Texas and Mexico. Chef Matthew Moser was born and raised in Omaha, NE and developed a passion for food and cooking at a young age. After graduating in 2005 from Western Culinary Institute in Portland, OR, Chef Moser moved back to Omaha where he worked at the nationally recognized French Café. It was there that Chef Moser refined his traditional French techniques and was quickly promoted to Sous Chef. To further advance his culinary knowledge, Chef Moser accepted a position at V Mertz, a contemporary fine dining restaurant in Omaha where he acquired a passion for farm-to-table ingredients that still strongly influence his menus today. 

In 2009, Chef Moser joined Omaha based Flagship restaurant group as Executive Chef at Blue Sushi Sake Grill. He successfully opened two new additions to the restaurant group in Fort Worth, TX and Denver, CO. In 2012, Moser became Executive Chef at Flagship’s Plank Seafood Provisions where he played a large roll in the creation and design of the menu. After spending two and a half years working at Plank, Chef Moser decided to leave Flagship and open up a concept of his own in Omaha’s Old Market called The Market House. 

The Market House opened in June of 2015 and was quickly recognized as one of Omaha’s best new restaurants. The menu reflected the innovative culinary skills of Chefs Matthew Moser and Ben Maides. In January 2015, an unfortunate gas explosion caused the restaurant to catch fire which ultimately destroyed the space. Chef Moser spent the next year working on his newest concept, Stirnella. 

Stirnella opened it’s doors in February of 2017. The restaurant’s menu and atmosphere reflect Chef Moser’s passion for his Nebraska roots and desire to create new and interesting culinary experiences for his guests. His seasonal menus are familiar but with unique ingredients and preparations that make them stand out among their more traditional counterparts.

Matt Carper was born and raised in Glenwood, IA; a small but robust farming community in Southwest Iowa. At a young age, Matt was unsure what he wanted to do, attending classes at University of Nebraska at Omaha seemed like the right thing. But Matt needed something more so he joined the Iowa Army National Guard, in part to pay for his education, but also for the adventure. Upon returning from a deployment to Afghanistan in 2005, Matt worked for several well know steakhouses (801 Steak and Chop at Paxton and Omaha Prime) in Omaha, NE. It was there while going to college that Matt realized he had a passion for the restaurant industry. Matt’s wife to be, Carrie introduced him to some amazing people. One of which worked at Blue Sushi Sake Grill in Northwest Omaha, Omaha’s premiere sushi restaurant. The evolution of sushi was making a big splash in Omaha and Matt recognized that. With the help of Matt’s wife’s best friend, Sara Cemer, he decided to adventure off and jump on the wave. In 2007 while finishing his Master’s degree, Matt began what would be a large portion of his restaurant career. Matt managed several restaurants for Flagship Restaurant Group from Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Bianco Restaurante Italiano, Baby Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Plank Seafood Provisions and Flagship Commons, Omaha’s first food hall. Matt Carper met Matt Moser at Blue Sushi Sake Grill and recognized his passion for high quality food and dedication to being a creative chef. Their working relationship continued for several years before joining forces to create one of Omaha’s best seafood restaurants, Plank Seafood Provisions. Moser and Carper helped design the menus and develop Plank with Flagship Restaurant Group. While at Plank, they always talked about other concepts they thought would do well in Omaha. Moser took the leap and opened The Market House in Omaha’s Historic Old Market. With the gas line explosion in the Old Market, The Market House was on standby for Matt Moser. Early in the summer of 2016 Moser asked Carper to review this new concept idea. Carper was immediately drawn in and the vision was painted. Carper asked Moser where Blackstone was and if he could see the space, he had honestly never been to Blackstone. Late in 2016 Carper was asked to be a part of what is now of course his favorite project to date. But don’t worry, there will be more…

Through this process, Stories Coffee Co. has grown into not just a coffee shop, but a roastery as well. The shuffleboard table came from the 49’r lounge and is fully restored.The statues came with the place when I bought it but we suspect they came from a Liquor distributor back in the day. The back bar is a Brunswick art deco piece that came from the German manufacturer in the 30’s. The Painting of the Boxer is the famous John L Sullivan . The Winery is back… with new ownership and a fresh look. Set in the same location with delicious deli offerings and approachable wine, it’s everything it was before with a new modern take.

Started in Omaha in 1986, The Winery was a favorite lunch spot for many for more than 30 years until it closed in 2018. The wine shop and deli provided a quick casual option before it was the popular thing to do, and exceptional service was its specialty.

New owners Holly Jones and Julie Hockney have a passion for great food, fun venues, and a love for getting people together. Their synergy has reimagined The Winery—building upon all its previous strengths and creating what is sure to become an Omaha staple once again.

Tiberon Golf Club

As owner of Omaha-favorite Railcar Modern American Kitchen, Jared Clarke is proud to be opening a new neighborhood restaurant in Countryside Village. A native of Fairfield, Nebraska, Jared received his culinary training from Southeast Community College and the University of Nebraska where he received a degree in Culinology. After beginning his career in Lincoln, Jared moved to Chicago in 2005 to work for Lettuce Entertain You Restaurants and Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant where he honed his skills in American, French and Asian cooking techniques. During his time developing wine dinners and menu concepts as R&D chef at Cooper’s, Jared worked with the Celiac Foundation to help create more flavorful gluten-free offerings.

Six years ago, Jared and his family moved back to Omaha where he was executive chef at Blue Sushi Sake Grill before developing and opening Railcar Modern American Kitchen in December, 2012.

Railcar has developed a loyal following of diners who crave Jared’s modern comfort food made from scratch. Now, he is excited to provide the same high-quality experience at Timber Wood Fire Bistro, a wood-fired grill concept.

V. Mertz is a contemporary American restaurant that emphasizes the use of local produce and meats.

HEAD CHEF JONATHAN MILLER
Jonathan Miller is no stranger to a kitchen, and as the head chef of V. Mertz, is no stranger to celebrating happiness through the form of food; something he considers of utmost importance when discussing his relationship with dining. Starting in kitchens 12 years ago, John has worked with many chefs, many cuisines, and many culinary styles. These experiences taught him what he considers the key to being a good chef , “To deliver a unique, creative experience, and make people happy.”

A Nebraska native, John got his start in the Omaha area at the age of 16. He later spent five years in Denver landing in a downtown steakhouse, Garden’s Grace, known for its high-quality food and high volume. Upon returning to Omaha in 2019, John joined the team at V.Mertz. He notes the change of pace and focus on the fine details of food preparation and plate presentation as pivotal in his culinary journey. John is uniquely inspired by Asian cuisine and flavors, recognizing citrus, spice, and umami as key concepts he likes to work with in his own dish creation.

As head chef, he is excited to move the menu in different directions and stay committed to an ever-changing menu, exploring new flavors and styles of cooking. John’s passion is strongly apparent and simply executed in his devotion to the kitchen staff, the constant desire to make better, more delicious food, and to the overall experience of all who dine at V.Mertz. “I keep it simple,” says Jonn. “My main goal is to make really great food.”

PASTRY & SOUS NATALIE ONES
Natalie is a native of Omaha. After earning her degree at the Metropolitan Community College Institute for the Culinary Arts, she cooked at Block 16. Starting in 2016, Natalie has worked every position at V. Mertz and now is the lead prep Sous Chef and runs the pastry program. She enjoys that the menu at V. Mertz is continually evolving which provides opportunities to grow in knowledge and skill. In her free time, Natalie is amused by well-narrated audio books, learning new piano & organ musical pieces, and playing with her many nieces and nephews.

Valentinos

In 1957, Val and Zena Weiler operated the Campus Fruit Market in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was clear to them that their business would soon be eclipsed by the large supermarkets springing up across Lincoln. The landmark which had stood for a dozen years, had to go. In its place, armed with three dozen pizza pans, a recipe that had been in Mrs. Weiler’s family for years, and a generous amount of trepidation, they decided to open a pizza business.

They took in $60 their first day, and as the restaurant’s reputation grew, patrons began to gather and watch through the window as the pizzas were made. They would stand in line for an hour or more to sample the pizza and pasta specialties created in the original restaurant.

There was just one location then and no trip to the city was complete with out stopping to eat at Valentino’s!

Valentino’s HistoryAbout three years after the 1971 purchase of Valentino’s, members of the Messineo and Alesio families carefully formulated plans to expand into additional locations.

Through controlled expansion, and an elaborate system of quality controls, Valentino’s steadily grew. In 1990, Valentino’s opened its first Valentino’s To-Go location, offering take out service only. These stores were an immediate success. Today there are more than 18 successful To-Go locations operating.

Today, Valentino’s has expanded to 35 restaurant locations in 4 different states. The wait is seldom longer than fifteen minutes now, but the recipes and meticulous preparation steps remain.

The Secret to Success
Valentino’s success began with those wonderful family recipes that were passed on when the business changed hands in 1971. However, there’s more than recipes to this story. The highest quality food, reasonable prices, immaculately clean and comfortable restaurants, genuinely friendly service, and a written corporate creed which says that “community service is as important as the quality of the food”, have helped keep Val’s tremendously popular.
